"The ship Admiral Kuznetsov and its aircraft are planned to join the grouping to increase its combat potential," he added.

Russian Navy ships have operated in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea on a permanent basis since 2013, the defense minister said. According to Shoigu, the board has also discussed the construction of sea-going ships armed with long-range high-precision weapons and the completion of the state trials of the Project 22350 lead frigate Admiral Gorshkov.

A military and diplomatic source told TASS earlier that the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov would head for the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.

According to the source, the aircraft based on the ship Admiral Kuznetsov will attack militants in Syria.
The aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov restored its technical readiness in summer. After that, the ship started testing its renewed air wing comprising Mikoyan MiG-29K/KUB (NATO reporting name: Fulcrum-D) shipborne fighter jets and Kamov Ka-52K (Hokum-B) helicopters.
