Russian Design Bureau Offers Project 22800E Corvette with Western Systems

Russia’s Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau has offered foreign customers a version of the Project 22800E corvette with Italy’s OTO Melara 76mm gun, MTU diesel engines and Thales radio technical equipment, the design bureau’s press office told the Flotprom online media organization.

The design bureau has also offered a version of the corvette with only Russian-made components, including engines, a gun and radars.

The mockup of the Project 22800E ship’s export version was shown for the first time at the Army 2016 international military and technical forum.

The version with foreign-made components may arouse more interest of foreign customers, in particular, India’s Navy seeking maximum military hardware diversification, the press office said.

The export version of the Project 22800E Karakurt-class corvette can be armed with the OTO Melara 76mm gun with a fire rate of 85-120 rounds per minute and a range of 16-20 kilometers (10-12 miles).

The Russian-made AK-176MA gun of the same class weighs a bit more and has a shorter range equal to 15.7 kilometers (9.7 miles) but a higher fire rate of 130 rounds per minute.

The Arsenal Machine-Engineering Plant in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia said on March 2, 2017 that the gun had passed the trials.

A source in the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau told Flotprom that the Russian gun had been integrated in the ship’s weapon and fire control system, while it would be necessary to develop a new system to mount the Italian weapon.
