"On morning September 5, 2017, the 'Admiral Essen' frigate of Russia`s Black Sea Fleet, which has been accomplishing tasks as a part of the Russian Navy`s long-standing operative task force in the Mediterranean, launched Kalibr SLCMs against the objects of the IS [forbidden in Russia] terroristic grouping near the city of Deir ez-Zor," the MoD said in a statement.

The strike was conducted against a stronghold near the city of ESh-Shola held by a terroristic unit that mainly included militants from Russia and the CIS countries.

The MoD pointed out that the strike had resulted in the destruction of command-and-control posts, a communication hub, munition depots, an armor repairing plant and a large group of terrorists. "The results of the strike have been confirmed by reconnaissance aviation and unmanned aerial vehicles," the MoD added.

According to the footage published on the official YouTube channel of the MoD, the 'Admiral Essen' frigate conducted consecutive launches of three 3M-14 missiles.

The Ministry reminded that the Syrian pro-governmental forces were continuing the operation to destroy a stronghold and a large well-armed group of the IS (forbidden in Russia) terrorists near the city of Deir ez-Zor.

"On the day before, the actions of the Syrian pro-governmental forces supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces` [VKS] aviation resulted in the full liberation of the Akerbat city in the eastern part of Hama province from the IS [forbidden in Russia] terrorists," the MoD concluded.

Russia`s Navy has launched 67 3M-14 Kalibr missiles since October 2015. Most of the SLCMs (44 missiles) were used by the Caspian Flotilla`s ships in October-November 2015. In December 2015, the Project 636.3 'Rostov-na-Donu' submarine launched four more 3M-14 missiles staying submerged in the Eastern Mediterranean. In August 2016, two Project 21631 corvettes, 'Serpukhov' and 'Zeleny Dol', conducted launches of three missiles from the Mediterranean Sea. In November 2016, the 'Admiral Grigorovich' Project 11356 frigate launched at least three missiles from the Mediterranean Sea. On May 30, 2017, the 'Admiral Essen' frigate and the 'Krasnodar' submarine conducted launches of four more 3M-14 SLCMs against the IS (forbidden in Russia) targets near Palmyra. On June 23, the 'Admiral Grigorovich' and 'Admiral Essen' frigates and the 'Krasnodar' submarine launched six SLCMs.
