OCCAR signs contract amendment N° 4 of LSS Logistic Support Ship Vulcano for Italian Navy.

According to information published on November 27, 2020, on 25th November 2020 in La Spezia, the Contract Amendment N° 4 for the LSS Logistic Support Ship “Vulcano” was signed between OCCAR-EA (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d'Armement/Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) (on behalf of the Italian Participant State) and the Temporary Consortium, consisting of Fincantieri and Leonardo Company.

The new Amendment introduces technical modifications to Logistic Support Ship LSS “Vulcano” equipment to meet the Italian Navy’s needs: Furthermore, it includes the acquisition and the integration on board of the New Generation Surface Radar Columbus and the implementation of new equipment concerning the Hospital Area.

The Vulcano is being built by Fincantieri Italian shipbuilding company with hull number 6259. The stern section is being built at the Riva Trigoso Naval Shipyard and the bow section is being built at the Castellammare di Stabia (Naples) Naval Shipyard.

ITS “Vulcano” is currently undergoing sea trials as part of the Qualification and Acceptance phase. She is scheduled to be delivered to the Italian Navy at the early beginning of 2021, and will see the kick-off of the In Service Support phase.

It is planned that the LSS Vulcano will enter in service with the Italian Navy in 2020. The ship is designed to support fleet operations with fuel and dry stores. The fore section of the new Italian Navy’s Logistic Support Ship (LSS), named Vulcano, was launched on the 10th of April 2017, at the FINCANTIERI shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia (Naples). The ship was launched in June 2018. 

In December 2019, OCCAR has announced that the LSS “Vulcano”, had her First Sea Going on 5th December 2019, logging her first nautical miles in the Gulf of La Spezia. During the First Sea Going (FSG), several Platform and Combat Systems installed onboard have been tested, especially the propulsion, steering and navigation systems.

The LSS Vulcano has an overall length of 193 m, a draft of 16.3m, and a depth of 8.4 m.  The ship is powered by a combined diesel-electric and diesel (CODLAD) propulsion system including two diesel engines M.A.N. 20V32/44CR, 24,000 kW and Turbo 20V32/44CR main engines rated at 12,000kW each.  The ship can reach a top speed of 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph) or 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph) on electric engines with a maximum cruising range of 7,000 nmi (13,000 km; 8,100 mi) to 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph). She has a crew of 167 sailors and can accommodate up to 235 people.
