The submarine Volkhov, the second in a series of six ships under construction at the Admiralty Shipyard for Russia’s Pacific Fleet, has been accepted for service with the Russian Navy on October 24, 2020, in compliance with an order by Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov.

The submarine Volkhov was laid down in July 2017 and floated out in December 2019. The first sub of this Project, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, was delivered to the Navy in December 2019.

The Project 636 class diesel-electric submarines, Kilo NATO-codename, are a further development of the proven Project 877EKM submarine featuring a quieter propulsion system as well as an improved weapon system. This submarine is designed to conduct anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface-ship warfare (ASuW). According to the Russian naval industry, Project 636 is considered to be one of the quietest diesel submarines in the world.

The Project 636 is fitted with two 1,000 kW diesel generators and motor 5,500–6,800 shp (4,100–5,100 kW) for the propulsion. It can reach a top surface speed of 17 knots (31 km/h; 20 mph) and 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph) submerged. The submarine has a crew of 52 sailors and an endurance of 45 days.

The armament of Project 636 includes six 533mm torpedo tubes and up to 18 weapons can be carried. Various models of the Type 53 torpedo can be launched, including wire-guided torpedoes such as TEST-71 and USET-80. The submarine can launch Kalibr/Club land-attack cruise missile, anti-ship missile, and anti-submarine missile. It can carry 24 mines as well as eight 9K34 Strela-3 (SA-N-8 Gremlin) or 8 9K310 Igla-1 (SA-N-10 Gimlet) Surface-to-air missiles.
