Description
The Boomerang or Bumerang is a new development of an 8x8 armored personnel carrier launched by the Russian defense industry to replace the old BTR family used by the Russian armed forces. During the International exhibition of arms and military equipment RAE 2013 in Nizhny Tagil, the project of this vehicle was unveiled to the Prime Minister of Russia. The first prototype of the Bumerang was delivered in 2013. Serial production of the Boomerang started in 2020 (even open to export), aiming to replace the BTR-82A and BTR-80 APCs currently in service with the Russian army, with a total of 2,000 vehicles in various configurations. In April 2015, the Boomerang was shown for the first time to the public during the rehearsal of the Victory Day military parade (9 May) on the Alabino testing range, near Moscow. There are two variants of the Bumerang: the K-16 APC and the K-17 IFV.
Bumerang 8x8 armored vehicles variants:
- Bumerang K-16: the Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) is equipped with a small unmanned turret featuring a sensor array and a 12.7 mm machine gun.
- Bumerang K-17: the IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) is fitted with a remotely controlled weapon station armed with a 2A42 30mm automatic cannon and four antitank missiles.

The Bumerang K-17 is equipped with an electrically powered unmanned turret mounted in the center of the hull. The turret is armed with the 2A42 30mm automatic cannon. A 7.62mm coaxial PKT machine gun is mounted to the left side of the main armament. Two launchers of anti-tank guided missile Kornet-EM are mounted on each side of the turret. The Bumerang can engage all mobile or static targets by day and night at a maximum range of 5,500m. The Kornet is an advanced ATGM (Anti-Tank Guided Missile) with a spiral trajectory. The Kornet-EM variant uses technical vision with an automatic target tracker to make it a "fire and forget" missile, giving it a 5-times increase in the accuracy of target tracking at any range. The fire-and-forget capability gives a vehicle the ability to salvo launch against two different targets at once, increasing its rate of fire and decreasing the number of vehicles needed for a mission. It can also salvo fire two missiles against one target to defeat vehicles equipped with an active protection system. The main armament can be controlled by the commander and gunner for firing operations.

The Bumerang layout is common to most of the 6x6 and 8x8 armored personal carriers, with the power pack at the front, the driver front left, the turret in the middle, and the troop’s compartment at the rear. The troops enter and leave via a single hydraulic door in the hull rear. The vehicle uses V-shaped technology for the hull, which protects occupants by deflecting mine blasts anywhere under the vehicle. The Bumerang can carry a total of 10 soldiers, including a driver, commander, gunner, and 7 infantrymen. Over the top of the hull at the rear of the turret are two roof hatches, one on each side, which are manually hinged and can be locked vertically to protect the troops when they are outside. The Bumerang hull provides protection against the firing of small arms and shell splinters. In addition to this, Bumerang is also equipped with bolt-on ceramic armor which offers all-around protection against 14.5 mm, armor-piercing ammunition, and artillery fragments from 152 mm rounds.

| The Bumerang uses an 8x8 all-terrain chassis. The Bumerang features a full 8 × 8 drive with power steering on the front four wheels. The Bumerang is motorized with a four-stroke turbocharged Diesel engine UTD-32TR developing 510 hp. in conjunction with hydromechanical transmission and hydrostatic transmission. The powerpack compartment is located in the middle of the hull. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 800 km. The Bumerang is fully amphibious, being propelled in the water at a maximum speed of 10 km/h by two propellers which were situated on either side of the rear of the hull. |

| As for all modern combat vehicles, the standard equipment of the Boomerang includes air-conditioning, an NBC protection system, night vision equipment, computerized fire control, and a central tire pressure regulation system. The Bumerang is fitted with video cameras to provide the troops a full 360° view all around from inside the vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with a computerized fire control system including a multi-channel electro-optical sighting system and laser rangefinder. |
