In August 2021, Navy Recognition has reported that the Chinese Navy has deployed its latest long-range bomber aircraft called H-6J, which is based on the Soviet-made Tupolev Tu-16 twin-engine jet bomber, and built under license in China by the company Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation.
The H-6J is the naval version of the H-6K twin-engine bomber aircraft which is in service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy Air Force (PLANAF) to replace the H-6G. The aircraft has a greater payload and range with performance similar to H-6K.
The H-6K is the latest variant in the H-6 family equipped with D-30KP turbofan engines of 12,000 kg thrust replacing the original Chinese turbojets. Other modifications include larger air intakes, a redesigned flight deck with smaller/fewer transparencies, and a large dielectric nose radome.
The H-6J is able to carry seven YJ-12 supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles, with six under the wings and one in the weapon bay.
The YJ-12 is a supersonic anti-ship cruise missile in service with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy. The YJ-12 is an air-launched variant of the missile, while the naval-based is the YJ-12A, and the land-based variant is the YJ-12B. According to Chinese military sources, the YJ-12 has a 400–500 kg warhead and a range of 300 km when traveling at Mach 3, or 400 km at a speed of Mach 4. The YJ-12 can also do evasive maneuvers to avoid anti-missile threats.
