The USS Pinckney (DDG-91) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in service with the United States Navy. She was laid down on 16 July 2001 by Ingalls Shipbuilding, at Pascagoula, Mississippi, launched on 26 June 2002, and commissioned on 29 May 2004 at Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme.
The USS Pinckney is a Flight IIA variant in the Arleigh Burke-class series. The design of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer incorporates stealth technologies, such as the angled rather than traditional vertical surfaces and the tripod mainmast, which make the ship more difficult to detect, in particular by antiship missiles. The ship is built around the Aegis Combat System and the SPY-1D multifunction passive electronically scanned array radar. The AEGISCombat System is an American-made integrated naval weapons system that uses powerful computer and radar technology to track and guide weapons to destroy enemy targets.
The Flight IIA version of Arleigh Burke ships has several new features including two hangars for antisubmarine warfare (ASW) helicopters, and a new, longer 5-inch/62-caliber (127 mm) Mark 45 Mod 4 naval gun.
The USS Pinckney is powered by four General Electric LM2500 gas turbines each generating 26,250 bhp (19,570 kW) coupled to two shafts, each driving a five-bladed reversible controllable pitch propeller. The ship can reach a top speed of 30 knots (56 km/h) with a maximum cruising range of 4,400 nautical miles (8,100 km) at 20 knots (37 km/h).
The Arleigh Burke Flight IIA has a length of 155 m, a beam of 20 m, a draft of 9.3 m, and a displacement of 9,300 tons. She has a complement of 380 people including 23 officers.
The USS Pinckney is armed with one 5 inches (127 mm)/62 caliber Mk 45 Mod 4 naval gun, two 25 mm Mk 38 automatic cannons, four .50 cal (12.7 mm) machine guns, one 20 mm Phalanx CIWS (Close-In Weapon System), two Mk 32 triple torpedo tubes for Mk 46 torpedoes and 96-cell Mk 41 VLS (Vertical Launching System) able to fire RIM-66 SM-2 surface-to-air missiles, BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missile, and RUM-139 VL-ASROC anti-submarine missiles.
