The maintenance contract of the five Álvaro de Bazán-class F-100 frigates of the Spanish Navy includes the development of activities to sustain and support the combat systems of these ships.
The Álvaro de Bazán class, also known as the F100 class is an air defense frigate built around the American Aegis Combat System using powerful computers and radar technology to track and guide weapons to destroy enemy targets. The Álvaro de Bazán-class multi-role frigate is one of the few non-US warships to carry the Aegis system and its associated SPY-1D 3D radar.
The Aegis Combat System is also mounted on American Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, Japanese Kongo-class destroyer, South Korean Sejong the Great-class destroyer, Australian Hobart-class destroyer, and the Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates.
The Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates were ordered by the Spanish Navy in January 1997 and the first ship was launched in October 2000 and commissioned in September 2002.
The Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate has an overall length of 146.7 m, a beam of 18.6 m, a draft of 4.75 m, and a displacement of 5,800 tons. The ship is powered by a combined diesel and gas propulsion (CODAG) system that includes two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines, two Caterpillar 3600 diesel engines, and two propellers. She can reach a top speed of 28 kn (52 km/h; 32 mph) with a cruising range of 4,500 nmi (8,300 km; 5,200 mi) at 18 kn (33 km/h; 21 mph).
The Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate is armed with one 5 inches (127.0 mm)/54 Mk45 Mod 2 naval gun, one Mark 41 (VLS) 48-cell vertical launching system, 32 standard SM-2MR Block IIIA surface-to-air missiles, 64 RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (4 per cell) air defense missiles, eight McDonnell Douglas RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile and two twin 12.75 in (323.8 mm) Mark 32 Mod 9 torpedo tubes with 12 Honeywell Mark 46 Mod 5 torpedoes.
