The YOT-01 is the first delivery of two 4,900 tons oil tankers for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The oil tanker is scheduled to be commissioned next spring and will play a role in transporting fuel from oil refineries to JMSDF bases. This is the first time that the Japan has an oil tanker in its fleet.
The vessels will be built to domestic tanker specifications at a cost of 5.1 billion yen for both of them. They will be built at Shin Kurushima Hashiham Dockyard of Shin Kurushima Dockyard Group. This is the first time that the firm built ships for the Japan Ministry of Defense.
An oil tanker, also known as a petroleum tanker, is a ship designed for the bulk transport of oil or its products. There are two basic types of oil tankers: crude tankers and product tankers. Crude tankers move large quantities of unrefined crude oil from its point of extraction to refineries. Product tankers, generally much smaller, are designed to move refined products from refineries to points near consuming markets.
