The Borei is a class of Russian-made nuclear-powered ballistic missile (SSBN) submarines that were built under the Russian designation Project 955 for the first three submarines of this class followed by five orther submarine built under Project 955A.

The first 955A submarine, Knyaz Vladimir, was laid down on 30 July 2012, during a ceremony attended by the Russian President Vladimir Putin. Two additional Project 955A submarines were laid down in 2014, one in late 2015, and one in late 2016.

According to Russian military sources, the Borei class includes a compact and integrated hydro-dynamically efficient hull for reduced broadband noise and the first ever use of pump-jet propulsion on a Russian nuclear submarine. The noise level is to be five times lower when compared to the third-generation nuclear-powered Akula-class submarines and two times lower than that of the U.S. Virginia-class submarines.

The Borei submarine has a length of 170 meters, 13 meters in diameter, and have a maximum submerged speed of at least 46 kilometers per hour (25 kn; 29 mph). The submarine is powered by one 1 ОК-650V nuclear reactor, one AEU steam turbine and one pump-jet.

According to "The Diplomat" website, Borei-A-class submarines feature improved stealth capabilities, better maneuverability, and an increased payload of nuclear-tipped submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBMs)

Project 955A strategic missile-carrying underwater cruisers represent the fourth generation of nuclear-powered subs built for the Russian Navy. According Russia’s Defense Ministry, Borei-A-class submarines are less noisy and feature improved maneuvering, depth and armament control systems.

The Borei-class submarine is capable of carrying up to 16 Bulava SLBMs (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles), while the Borei-A class can carry up to 20 ballistic missiles. The missile has a maximum range of 8,000 km and can hold 10 warheads with each warhead having a yield of approximately 550 kt.
