Russian state commission accepts Magadan third Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine.

According to information released by the Russian press agency on October 6, 2021, the Russian state commission has signed an acceptance report for the Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine Magadan (NATO reporting name: Improved Kilo), the press office of the Admiralty Wharves Shipyard said.

The Admiralty Wharves Shipyard is a subsidiary of the United Shipbuilding Corporation. “The state commission has signed an acceptance report for the Magadan diesel-electric submarine at the Admiralty Wharves Shipyard,” the press office said. The Admiralty Wharves Shipyard is building a series of six submarines of upgraded Project 636 for the Russian Pacific Fleet.

The Magadan is the third Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine designed for the Pacific Fleet. It was laid down on November 1, 2019, and launched on March 26, 2021, being 91 percent ready.

A contract for the construction of a series of submarines was signed in September 2016, which was a continuation of the Defense Ministry’s long-term plan to restore the combat readiness of the Navy and the program to improve diesel-electric submarines.

Project 636.3 submarines are third-generation large diesel-electric submarines in the Kilo-class family. The first 636.3 Kilo-class (aka Vashavyanka-class) entered into service with the Russian Navy in November 2019. 

Citing "The Diplomat" website, the Project 636.3 Kilo-class is an improved variant of the original Project 877 Kilo-class design. The updated version is slightly longer in length — the sub’s submerged displacement is around 4,000 tons — and features improved engines, an improved combat system, as well as new noise reduction technology. The submarine has a crew of 52 people and can conduct underwater patrols for up to 45 days. The sub can dive to a maximum depth of about 300 meters and has an operational range of up to 12,000 kilometers. It is armed with both torpedoes and cruise missiles.
