The new YT 808-class is the first to be constructed to meet EPA Tier 4 marine diesel engine emission standards. With a length of 27 m and a beam of 12 m, tugs have a top speed of approximately 12.5 knots (23.0 km/h) and a bollard pull of approximately 43 long tons allowing them to effectively perform towing and ship-assist duties for carriers, surface ships, submarines, and barges.
The new yard tugboat is a Valiant-class designed by J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp to provide ship assist, barge and general towing, and escort services. The initial YT 808 is the newest vessel in the U.S. Navy’s effort to modernize its tug fleet.
The Valiant-class tugs have an extendable, pivoting brow for use when personnel transfers are required. There are four staterooms, 2 singles for the chief engineer and the tug master, and two doubles for the other crew members. There is also a galley and mess area. The deckhouse is well insulated to reduce vibration and sound levels in the accommodations areas.
The Valiant-class is powered by two Caterpillar 3512C each developing 1,800 hp. The biggest change in the YT 808 class is due to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emissions standards for marine diesel engines.
