Unprecedented cooperation in defence and military fields between Algeria and Britain has been noted since the start of the year. This has been exemplified by the recent visits of two senior British officials, including Minister of State in charge of the Armed Forces, Stephen Heppey.

These interactions focused on enhancing military relations between the two nations and addressing global and regional security challenges. Both sides have expressed readiness to further develop bilateral military cooperation in various fields, promoting a dynamic of cooperation based on frank exchange and a pragmatic vision.

About the training ship

Soummam measures 132 meters in length and has a beam of 16.4 meters. With a displacement of 5,500 tonnes, the ship ensures stability and accommodates various onboard systems.

Propulsion is provided by two MTU 12V-538-TB92 diesel engines, which deliver a total power output of 3,800 kW. This enables the ship to achieve a maximum speed of 22.22 knots (41 km/h).

The armament of the Soummam training ship includes an AK-176 76mm gun, two Chinese Type-76A twin 37mm guns, and two AK-630 6x30mm guns.

The ship is equipped with several electronic systems, including a Type 360 radar, a Type 363 radar, a Type 347G weapons control system, a Type 344 weapons control system, a Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) system, and two optronic systems.
