Aselsan completes integration of Gokdeniz CIWS on Istanbul class frigate.

According to information published by Daily Sabah on October 6, 2023, Aselsan, has recently incorporated three notable marine systems into the Turkish fleet, which were introduced at Teknofest in Izmir. These systems are set to be incorporated into the Istanbul class frigate Istanbul.

The Istanbul class frigate is a part of Turkey's MİLGEM project, representing a step in the country's naval endeavors. It is designed for various missions, including surface warfare and anti-submarine operations.

At the Teknofest event in Izmir, Aselsan introduced three systems for integration into the Istanbul class frigate:

The GÖKDENİZ system, a close-in weapon system (CIWS) characterized by its dual 35mm barrels. The Oerlikon 35mm twin cannon at its core allows the system to deliver a rapid firing rate of up to 1100 rounds a minute.

Given its capability to operate with both the 35×228mm ATOM and the 35×228mm HEI-T ammunition, it can effectively neutralize various incoming threats within a range of 4 km. Its primary function is to defend the vessel against incoming missiles, aircraft, and even smaller maritime targets that approach within its effective range.

The CENK radar system is another integral addition to the frigate. This radar system specializes in the detection of diverse threats. Its high-resolution scanning capability makes it adept at identifying aircraft, missiles, and surface vehicles at considerable distances.

In a maritime environment where threats can emerge rapidly, the ability to detect and classify these threats promptly is crucial. CENK will serve this purpose, providing the frigate's command with vital situational awareness.

Complementing the defensive capabilities brought by GÖKDENİZ and CENK is the AKREP fire control radar. Distinct from general-purpose radars, AKREP is designed to provide real-time targeting data.

It aids the ship's weapon systems by offering precise tracking of specific targets. By ensuring that the ship's armaments get accurate and timely data, AKREP enhances the likelihood of successful target engagement.
