The HMCS Ottawa, the final vessel in the Halifax-class line of frigates, was designed and constructed to meet the diverse operational needs of the Canadian Navy. The ship is part of Maritime Forces Pacific and plays a role in ensuring the security of Canada’s maritime interests in the Pacific Ocean and its surroundings.

The design of HMCS Ottawa embodies the shift in naval strategic priorities of the Canadian Navy, balancing anti-submarine warfare capabilities with the flexibility to address surface and aerial threats.

The ship is powered by a Combined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, which allows for a blend of high speed and long-range endurance, enabling the ship to rapidly respond to various operational demands.

Its array of defensive and offensive weapons includes the Sea Sparrow Missile system for aerial threats and Harpoon missiles for surface engagements, along with a 57 mm Mk 3 main gun that is capable of engaging both sea and land targets.

These systems are complemented by a comprehensive suite of sensors and electronic warfare equipment that provides the crew with situational awareness and supports informed decision-making in a variety of tactical scenarios.

HMCS Ottawa has undergone a series of modernizations to its combat systems, sensors, and electronic warfare capabilities to maintain operational effectiveness. The addition of the CH-148 Cyclone helicopter has extended the ship’s operational capabilities, allowing for greater reach in anti-submarine warfare and expanding its role in search and rescue, surveillance, and logistical support operations.
