The AOPS vessels are named after distinguished heroes of the Royal Canadian Navy, in keeping with the long-standing tradition of ship-naming.
This custom is steeped in naval history and is believed to bring good fortune and safe voyages to both the ship and its crew. The Halifax Shipyard is set to deliver one AOPS vessel annually to the Royal Canadian Navy, with the sixth and final ship expected to be completed in 2026.
Additionally, two AOPS variants are slated to be constructed for the Canadian Coast Guard, while construction of the first of 15 Canadian Surface Combatants is scheduled to commence in 2024.
