At DSEI 2023, Team Resolute, the collaboration between Navantia UK, BMT, and Harland & Wolff, revealed its updated design for the Fleet Solid Support ships, aligned with the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) £1.6 billion plan to equip the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) for supporting the Royal Navy's worldwide missions.

The new design, crafted by BMT’s UK team, represents a shift in naval logistics. BMT's contributions also encompass safety and environmental management, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), training modules, and the ships' security standards.

The current phase of the FSS program showcases the progress of Team Resolute, BMT, and their association with the MoD and DE&S. Their design methodology considers the integration of contemporary technologies focusing on energy conservation and carbon reduction.

The FSS ship design, influenced by BMT's previous naval ventures, prioritizes compatibility, interoperability, and safety, aiming to meet the UK MoD’s sustainability objectives.

About the program

These ships will specialize in providing underway replenishments, delivering essentials like ammunition, spare parts, and supplies to the Royal Navy's fleet.

A vital role they'll play is supporting the UK Carrier Strike Group, ensuring that the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers and their accompanying ships are well-stocked.

While the initial plan was for all three ships to be active from 2028 to 2032, a recent update from the Ministry of Defence pushed the deployment of the inaugural ship to 2031.
