As successors to the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, Flight III ships are equipped with the Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR), offering superior detection and tracking capabilities. This transformative feature enhances the ship's threat detection range and precision.

To accommodate the AMDR and other advanced systems, the destroyers are fitted with new electric plants and air-conditioning systems, ensuring efficient and reliable operations.

While they retain the foundational characteristics of the Arleigh Burke class, the ships have undergone significant structural modifications to support the new equipment.

Beyond addressing current maritime challenges, the Flight III design emphasizes adaptability. The Navy has ensured these ships are modular, allowing for upgrades as new technologies emerge, ensuring their long-term relevance.

Technical data

The Arleigh Burke class destroyers are equipped with a propulsion system consisting of four General Electric LM2500 gas turbines. Each turbine generates 26,250 bhp (19,570 kW).

These are connected to two shafts, with each shaft driving a five-bladed reversible controllable-pitch propeller. The combined output of these turbines is 105,000 bhp (78,000 kW).

In terms of performance metrics, these destroyers can reach speeds exceeding 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). Their operational range is 4,400 nautical miles (8,100 km; 5,100 mi) at a consistent speed of 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph).
