India Navy to give Khukri class corvette INS Kirpan to Vietnam.

According to information published by the Indian government on June 19, 2023, the Indian MoD Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh announced the gifting of an indigenously built-in service Khukri-class corvette INS Kirpan.

In line with his itinerary, the Vietnamese Defence Minister paid a visit to the DRDO headquarters, where discussions were held regarding the enhancement of defence industrial capabilities through collaborative research and joint production.

Before this engagement, General Phan Van Giang visited the National War Memorial earlier in the day, laying a wreath and paying tribute to the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The respected visitor landed in India on June 18 for a two-day tour. India considers Vietnam a significant partner in its Act East Policy and within the Indo-Pacific region.

About the corvette

The Khukri-class corvette is a naval vessel with a displacement of 1,350 tons when fully loaded. She measures 91.1 meters in length, with a beam of 10.5 meters and a draught of 4.5 meters.

Propelled by two diesel engines delivering a total of 14,400 horsepower to two shafts, this corvette is capable of reaching speeds of 25 knots (approximately 50 km/h).

The vessel has a range of 4,000 nautical miles (or 7,400 km) at a speed of 16 knots (30 km/h), and can accommodate a crew of 79, including 10 officers.

Equipped with MR 352 Pozitiv-E radar, Garpun-Bal radar, and Bharat 1245 navigation radar, the Khukri-class corvette has a robust sensor and processing system array.

She is armed with 4 P-20M (SS-N-2D) anti-ship missiles, 2 Strela-2M (SA-N-5) surface-to-air missiles, 1 AK-176 76mm gun, and 2 30mm AK-630 guns. The vessel is designed to carry one helicopter, specifically a HAL Chetak model.
