Indonesia partners with German firm Anschutz to modernize 41 ships.

According to information published by Antara on November 10, 2023, the Indonesian defense industry has partnered with German navigation technology provider Anschütz to modernize 41 naval vessels, including submarines.

Under this partnership, Anschütz will transfer technology related to the maintenance and training of navigation systems. The agreement, signed on November 9, includes training programs for Indonesian technicians developed by Anschütz. Additionally, Indonesian Navy personnel are expected to participate in the training and maintenance activities.

Anschütz’s technology, such as gyro inertial systems, warship electronic chart display and information systems (WECDIS), and integrated bridge and navigation systems (IBNS), is already in use in the Indonesian naval fleet.

The modernization project for the 41 Indonesian Navy ships is led by PT PAL Indonesia (Persero), as designated by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense.

The project involves various ship classes and includes updates such as ship conversion, the installation of surface-to-surface missiles, integration of weapon systems into the Combat Management System, and performance enhancements through re-powering systems. The project also includes updating the navigation and communication systems of Fast Missile Crafts (Kapal Cepat Rudal or KCR) and Guided Missile Destroyers (Perusak Kawal Rudal or PKR).

About the PKR

The vessel, with a displacement of 2,365 tons and 2,946 tons when fully loaded, measures 105.11 meters in length, has a beam of 14.02 meters, and a draft of 3.75 meters. She is powered by a Combined Diesel or Electric (CODOE) propulsion system, consisting of two 10,000 kW maximum continuous rating (MCR) diesel propulsions and two 1,300 kW MCR electric propulsions, driving two controllable pitch (CP) propellers.

The ship can reach speeds of 28 knots using maximum power and maintains a speed of 15 knots on electric propulsion. Its operational range is 5,000 nautical miles at 14 knots, with an endurance of 20 days at sea.

Equipped to carry two rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIB), the ship has a complement of 122 persons. Her sensor and processing systems include the Thales TACTICOS Baseline 2 Combat Management System with ten MOC Mk.4 consoles, the Thales SMART-S Mk2 3D Air and surface surveillance radar, and the Thales STIR 1.2 EO Mk2 Radar/EO fire control system.

The sonar equipment is the Thales UMS 4132 KINGKLIP Medium frequency active/passive Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) hull-mounted sonar. The vessel also features the Thales Link-Y Mk2 Datalink system and the Thales TSB2520 IFF system.

The ship is outfitted with the Thales Vigile 100S Mk2 Tactical multi-purpose Radio Electronic Support Measures (RESM) and the Thales Scorpion 2L Radio Electronic Countermeasures (RECM), along with the Terma SKWS DL-12T 130 mm 12-tube decoy launcher.

The vessel's armament includes one OTO Melara Super Rapid 76 mm main gun, two Denel Vektor GA-1 20 mm autocannons, and one Rheinmetall Oerlikon Millennium Gun 35 mm Close-In Weapon System (CIWS).

The frigate carries 12 VL MICA-M Surface-to-air missiles and eight Exocet MM40 Block III Anti-ship missiles. She also features two WASS B515/3 Triple torpedo launchers equipped with WASS A244-S Mod.3 324 mm lightweight torpedoes. The vessel can carry one Eurocopter AS565 Panther helicopter, supported by a fully equipped helicopter deck and hangar.
