These FFMs are part of the Mogami-class, known for their stealth capabilities and multi-mission profile, aimed at reinforcing the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's (JMSDF) operational readiness and versatility.
The Mogami-class frigates, also referred to as 30FFM, 30FF, 30DX, or 30DEX, represent a significant leap in naval architecture and combat systems. With a standard displacement of 3,900 tons and a full load displacement of 5,500 tons, these frigates are designed for a breadth of maritime tasks. The vessels measure 133 meters in length and 16.3 meters in beam, enabling high-speed maneuverability and a breadth of operational capabilities.
Equipped with a CODAG propulsion system, including one Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine and two MAN Diesel engines, these frigates are capable of speeds exceeding 30 knots.
The Mogami-class is also adept at carrying various small craft and autonomous vehicles, including two Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB), Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV), and Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV), thereby extending their surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
The crew of 90 personnel is supported by state-of-the-art sensors and processing systems, such as the OPY-2 multi-purpose AESA radar, EO/IR systems, advanced anti-submarine warfare equipment including the OQQ-25 (VDS + TASS), and the OQQ-11 mine-hunting sonar. The OYQ-1 combat management system and OYX-1-29 console display system integrate all operational data for effective maritime domain awareness.
In terms of armaments, the Mogami-class is outfitted with a formidable array of weapons, including a 5-inch Mk-45 Mod 4 naval gun, missile canisters for Type 17 anti-ship missiles, a SeaRAM, torpedoes, and simplified mine-laying equipment. Its advanced vertical launching system (VLS) carries the naval version of the Type 03 Chū-SAM and Type 07 VLA, supplemented by two remote weapon stations for enhanced defensive and offensive operations.
The onboard aviation facilities, capable of accommodating an SH-60L helicopter, augment the ship's anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue operations. The frigates' electronic warfare suite includes the NOLQ-3E system, which integrates passive radar and electronic attack capabilities, along with a chaff dispenser for countermeasures.
