The Portuguese Navy's acquisition of a landing platform ship is a key component in its extensive fleet modernization program, aimed at replacing over 80% of its aging ships to enhance military and coast guard capabilities.
This modernization reflects the Navy's strategic shift towards an expeditionary capability, crucial for projecting and sustaining battalion-size marine or army forces. Additionally, the LPD will enhance the Navy's ability to perform coast guard roles, including maritime surveillance, fishery patrol, and pollution control within Portugal's exclusive economic zone, alongside new classes of offshore and coastal patrol vessels.
