Russia launches Project 885M Yasen-M class submarine Arkhangelsk.

According to information published by USC on November 29, 2023, the Sevmash Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) has launched the nuclear powered Yasen M class submarine Arkhangelsk. This marks the completion of the dock construction phase for the third serial vessel of this modernized series.

During the ceremony, the ship was christened in traditional fashion, with Captain 1st Rank Alexander Gladkov, the commander of the Arkhangelsk, breaking a champagne bottle against the hull.

Mikhail Budnichenko, the CEO of Sevmash announced that the Arkhangelsk would soon move from the flooding dock to the quayside for further construction and testing. Following its completion at the quayside, the subparine's trials will be supported by its crew, the acceptance team, Military Representation 1059, and the White Sea Naval Base.

About the Yasen M class

The Arkhangelsk can reach a surface speed of 16 knots and a submerged speed of 31 knots. Its operational diving depth is 520 meters, with a maximum depth capability of 600 meters. The submarine has an endurance of 100 days at sea and accommodates a crew of 64 people.

Regarding dimensions, the Yasen-M class submarines, including the Arkhangelsk, have a reduced displacement compared to their predecessors. The surface displacement is about 8600 tons, and the submerged displacement is around 13,800 tons. The vessel's maximum length is 130 meters, with a maximum hull width of 13 meters and an average draft of 9.4 meters.

The Arkhangelsk is heavily armed. Its torpedo armament includes 10 × 533 mm torpedo tubes located closer to the midsection of the hull, capable of carrying up to 30 torpedoes, including homing and wire-guided types, and can also be equipped with mines.

Its missile weaponry comprises 8 × 4 launchers for P-800 "Oniks" or "Zircon" missiles, or 8 × 5 launchers for "Kalibr" 3M54/3M14/91R missiles. The submarine is also equipped with Igla-S or Verba man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) for air defense.
