Singapore Navy receives Invincible class submarine Impeccable.

According to information published by the Ministry of Defence of Singapore on July 20, 2023, the Asian nation celebrated the arrival of the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) Invincible-class submarine, the Impeccable.

The submarine's arrival was marked by a homecoming ceremony at RSS Singapura – Changi Naval Base, with Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Sean Wat, along with senior RSN officers and submariners, in attendance.

The Impeccable was launched on December 13, 2022, in Kiel, Germany. It is one of four Invincible-class submarines uniquely designed for Singapore's shallow, crowded tropical waters.

Equipped with advanced capabilities such as extensive automation, generous payload capacity, and extended underwater endurance, these submarines are tailor-made to meet Singapore's specific requirements.

Notably, their ergonomics are optimized to suit the Asian physique. The introduction of these submarines to the RSN will undoubtedly amplify its capacity to ensure Singapore's security and protect its critical sea routes.

In the immediate future, the Impeccable will be put through a succession of local sea trials and preparatory operations for full operational readiness. Meanwhile, its sister submarine, the Invincible, will remain in Germany for RSN submariner training. The final two submarines of this class are progressing satisfactorily in their construction phase in Germany.

Technical data

The Invincible-class submarine has a displacement of 2,000 tons surfaced and 2,200 tons submerged. The vessel spans 70 meters (229 feet 8 inches) in length with a beam width of 6.3 meters (20 feet 8 inches).

The propulsion system of this submarine is a combination of diesel-electric and air-independent propulsion (AIP), supported by two installed PEM fuel cells, each providing 120 kW of power.

This powers the vessel to speeds of 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph) when surfaced, and this increases to 15 knots (28 km/h; 17 mph) when the submarine is submerged.

The submarine carries a crew of 28 members and operates using a "Combat Management System" (CMS) developed by Atlas Elektronik-ST Electronics, as well as data analytics/decision support engines developed by DSTA.

Armament for this class of submarine includes eight 533 mm (21.0 in) torpedo tubes capable of holding heavyweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, or naval mines.
