The Houthis, an Iran-backed group controlling large parts of Yemen, have emerged as a significant maritime threat, particularly to Israel. This threat has been exemplified by various incidents and developments in the region.

Rebels hijacked a cargo vessel in the Red Sea, taking 25 crew members hostage. This vessel was reportedly linked to Israel, as it was partly owned by an Israeli businessman and operated under the Bahamian flag.

The Houthis claimed they had seized the ship as part of their broader conflict against Israel, directly tying their actions to Israel's military campaign in Gaza. This incident demonstrated the Houthis' willingness and capability to target Israeli interests in the Red Sea.

The militias have launched several missile and drone attacks against Israel since early October. These attacks are part of a larger regional strategy aligned with Iran, which includes other groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran-backed militias in Iraq.

The group's ability to project power beyond Yemen's borders into the Red Sea, a critical maritime route, highlights its growing naval capabilities and the threat it poses to regional stability and security.

In response to these escalating threats, the Israeli military has deployed missile boats in the Red Sea. Images released by the military show Saar-class corvettes patrolling near the Eilat port in the Red Sea, indicating Israel's recognition of the Red Sea as a new front in its ongoing conflict.
