The urgency of acquiring these submarines is underscored by the necessity to operate stealthily across vast oceanic expanses, safeguarding Canada's maritime borders and supporting its economy. The new submarines must meet stringent criteria, including cost-effectiveness, long-range travel capabilities, Arctic operability, and swift delivery.

At a NATO summit in Washington earlier this month, Canada officially initiated the procurement process for 12 conventionally-powered submarines, with detailed criteria expected to be released in the fall.

The Defense Ministry highlighted the increasing activities of Russian and Chinese submarines as a pressing concern. Defense Minister Bill Blair stated that the new fleet would bolster Canada's sovereignty and contribute significantly to NATO's security.

Representatives from the Canadian Navy, the Defense Ministry, and Public Services and Procurement Canada have visited Europe and Asia to explore potential submarine models.

Contenders include TKMS (Germany), Hanwha and Hyundai (South Korea), Navantia (Spain), Naval Group (France), Kawasaki and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan), and Saab (Sweden). These companies are actively lobbying Canadian officials, leveraging the expertise of former naval officers and lobbyists.

Comments

The current fleet consists of four Victoria-class diesel-electric submarines acquired from the UK. These submarines have faced numerous operational challenges, including mechanical failures and maintenance issues, which have limited their effectiveness and operational availability.
