Presented at the DSA 2024 exhibition held in Malaysia, the Thunderer A2000 is introduced as a new tool for maritime dominance. Equipped with an AESA radar for comprehensive surface and air surveillance, its heavy armament stands out. Featuring an 8-cell Vertical Launch System (VLS), it hosts short and medium-range surface-to-air missiles (announced as FM-3000N and CM-802B) for effective air defense capabilities focused on missile and drone interception. The FM-3000N and CM-802B are medium and short-range interceptor missiles, respectively.
A notable feature is the 24-cell launchers positioned on the starboard and port sides. These launchers deploy roaming munitions, thus enhancing the USV's offensive capabilities. Although the armament is considerable, it does not include anti-ship missiles, but it is mentioned that smaller USVs enhance the capabilities of the ship.
The A2000 has the ability to command smaller USVs within its operational sphere while providing nearby air defense. Controlled from a ground station, satellite connectivity extends its operational range. The demonstrator indicates simulations of up to 600 km.
Furthermore, it was revealed that the Thunderer A2000 has a platform for performing VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) operations for surveillance and detection needs. This capability allows the USV to identify detected contacts, thereby improving the recognized maritime picture. It is announced that two UAS are embarked on the maritime drone.
Thus, the A2000 is presented as a tool ensuring reconnaissance and surveillance functions in peacetime, and offensive capabilities in times of tension. This paves the way for an extension of the strike capabilities of USVs, often limited by their operational range. The A2000 allows for increasing this range while enhancing the operational capabilities around the maritime drone.
