The Greek crew managed to shoot down two drones during the incident. The Dutch ship Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman alerted their Greek counterparts to the imminent threat and was on standby to provide medical assistance if necessary. Fortunately, no injuries or material damage occurred. The drone attack took place off the coast of Somalia. The crew of HS Psara used various weapon systems and the ship's cannon to neutralize the threat, allowing the cargo ship to continue its journey safely.
Onboard the Greek naval ship during the attack were three Dutch staff members, including Commander George Pastoor, who was visiting for work.
Houthi units in Yemen pose a threat using various types of drones, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). These drones are employed for reconnaissance and attacks on military bases, critical infrastructure, and maritime traffic in the region. Due to their difficulty in detection and interception, the Houthis can inflict significant damage with limited resources.
The Royal Netherlands Navy is aware of the drone threat and has been conducting exercises and preparing new systems to counter drone attacks from both the air and the sea.
The EU operation Aspides aims to promote free passage and protect shipping in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Gulf region. The Netherlands, like the rest of Europe, has a vested interest in the safe and unhindered transport of goods by sea. Currently, this free passage is under severe threat from Houthi attacks using drones and ballistic missiles launched from Yemen.
