The JS Kaga (DDH-184), a helicopter carrier of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), is undergoing significant modifications to transform it into a light aircraft carrier capable of operating F-35B Lightning II fighter jets.

The JS Kaga is part of the Izumo-class, which includes another ship, JS Izumo (DDH-183). The conversion of these vessels is part of Japan's broader strategy to enhance its maritime defense capabilities and project power in the Indo-Pacific region.

The modification process for the JS Kaga is divided into two main stages. The first stage, completed in March 2023, involved substantial alterations, including reinforcing the flight deck to support the weight of F-35B aircraft, adding heat-resistant coatings, modifying the bow shape to resemble that of the U.S. Navy's amphibious assault ships, and installing additional guidance lights and markings to assist in the launch and recovery of aircraft.

The second stage of modifications, planned for completion by fiscal year 2027, will focus on further structural adjustments, including changes to the ship's internal compartments and crew areas to accommodate the operational requirements of the F-35B.

Following the initial modifications, JS Kaga has conducted a series of sea trials to test its new capabilities. The first set of trials began in November 2023, with additional trials continuing into 2024.

These tests aim to validate the modifications and ensure the carrier's readiness for F-35B operations. The ship's new capabilities are crucial for Japan's strategic interests, particularly in the contested East China Sea region, where the F-35B's ability to conduct short takeoffs and vertical landings from a carrier greatly enhances Japan's aerial reach and flexibility.
