As the Psara docked, attention shifted to the modernization of the Navy's four Hydra-class MEKO frigates, a crucial step to maintain the fleet's operational capabilities. Despite ongoing challenges, these upgrades remain a priority, with the fleet facing a lengthy process before a full renewal.

During its mission as part of the European operation "Aspides," the 194-member crew of the Psara operated under heightened readiness, aware of both the ship's strengths and its limitations compared to other vessels in the operation. Meanwhile, the frigate Spetsai is next in line for a three-month deployment in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Ahead of this mission, Spetsai has undergone necessary mechanical and weapons system updates, including the installation of new wiring and the integration of the anti-drone system "Centaur." This system, already tested on Psara, is critical for addressing modern drone threats, especially given the current risks in regions like Yemen.

The fleet is working under tight deadlines to ensure Spetsai is fully operational before departure. Despite the challenging logistics, naval personnel remain focused on enhancing the frigate's capabilities to meet modern threats, using lessons learned from previous deployments.

At the strategic level, the modernization of the four MEKO frigates remains a pressing issue. With negotiations ongoing for the acquisition of additional French Belharra-class frigates, the Navy is committed to ensuring these vessels are upgraded to meet contemporary operational demands. The aging fleet faces increasing pressure, and military sources indicate that critical decisions regarding the MEKO upgrades are expected soon.

These upgrades, particularly to the radar, sensors, and combat systems, are crucial to maintaining the Navy’s strength in a rapidly evolving security environment. The goal is to complete all upgrades within three years to avoid long gaps in operational readiness.
