HMS Duncan, a Type 45 destroyer and one of the Royal Navy's six air defense specialists, worked in conjunction with a Typhoon from RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus.

The exercise was strategically overseen by the RAF’s 83 Expeditionary Air Group, which monitored the operation via satellite from a Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC).

The training scenario involved HMS Duncan’s Wildcat Helicopter simulating an enemy drone on an attack trajectory towards RAF Akrotiri.

Upon receiving an alert from the CAOC about the imminent threat, the RAF Typhoon Detachment in Cyprus rapidly responded. The Typhoon jet coordinated with HMS Duncan under the guidance of the ship’s Fighter Controllers, known as ‘Freddies.’

Comments

The integration of HMS Duncan’s radar capabilities with the Typhoon’s advanced sensors and weapons systems highlights the importance of interoperability in modern defense. The Type 45 destroyer’s SAMPSON radar is capable of tracking multiple targets simultaneously, providing crucial data to the Typhoon for precise engagement.
