The frigate Triput is part of a contract signed on January 25, 2019, between the Ministry of Defence and GSL. Designed for comprehensive combat operations, the Triput class ships are equipped to engage enemy surface ships, submarines, and aircraft.

These frigates, successors to the Teg and Talwar class ships from Russia, are being indigenously constructed for the first time by an Indian shipyard.

About the Talwar class

These vessels are based on the Russian Krivak III-class frigates but incorporate advancements to meet modern naval warfare requirements.

The Talwar-class frigates feature a hull design that reduces radar cross-section, contributing to their stealth capabilities.

These frigates are equipped with a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion system, comprising two DS-71 cruise turbines and two DT-59 boost turbines, enabling a top speed of 32 knots and a cruising range of 4,500 nautical miles at 15 knots.

Initially, the Talwar-class ships were armed with the Russian-made Klub-N anti-ship missiles. However, later batches, starting with the INS Teg, Tarkash, and Trikand, were upgraded to carry the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

These frigates are also equipped with the Shtil-1 medium-range surface-to-air missile system for air defense, as well as the Kashtan or AK-630M close-in weapon systems for point defense.
