Gianfranca Millelire, a direct descendant of Domenico Millelire, served as the godmother of the event. She christened the vessel by breaking a bottle of champagne, a traditional gesture meant to bring good luck and ensure the vessel’s safety at sea.
Under the supervision of the OCCAR-EA PPA Programme Division and the Italian Naval Armament Directorate, the PPA 7 will now proceed with further technical activities.
The PPA (Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura) vessels, although sharing a common platform, are constructed in three different configurations: LIGHT (two ships), LIGHT PLUS (three ships), and FULL (two ships). The "Domenico Millelire" is the second vessel in the FULL configuration and is scheduled for delivery to the Italian Navy by the third quarter of 2026.
About the PPA
These multi-purpose offshore patrol vessels are designed to perform a wide range of missions including patrolling, surface combat, anti-piracy operations, maritime zone monitoring, and rescue missions.
Each configuration varies in terms of sensors and weaponry, with the Full version being the most heavily equipped. The Full version features a displacement of 6,270 tons, making it comparable to the Italian FREMM frigates, and is equipped with advanced missile systems including the Aster 15 and Aster 30, and TESEO MK2/E anti-ship missiles.
These vessels are also designed for modularity and automation, allowing them to support various operations ranging from civil protection to full combat roles.
They can carry up to two NH90 or one AW101 helicopters, and are equipped with facilities to support extended maritime operations, including the capability to supply drinking water and electricity to land installations.
Overall, the PPAs will replace older vessels like the Soldati-class frigates and Minerva-class corvettes.
