The Reis-class submarines represent a significant advancement in Turkey's naval capabilities, featuring advanced air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems. These submarines are part of the New Type Submarine Project (YTDP), a collaborative effort between the Turkish Defense Industry Agency (SSB) and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).
This project, valued at €2.06 billion, involves the construction of six submarines, with the first vessel, TCG Piri Reis, laid down in 2015 and launched in December 2019. Piri Reis began sea trials in December 2022 and is expected to enter service in 2023, with subsequent submarines to be commissioned annually until 2027.
The Reis-class submarines are based on the German Type 214 model, featuring a length of 68.35 meters, a beam of 6.3 meters, and a displacement of approximately 2,050 tons when submerged. They are equipped with PEM fuel cells for their AIP system, which allows them to operate underwater for extended periods without surfacing. This capability enhances their stealth and operational endurance, enabling them to remain submerged for up to three weeks depending on operational conditions.
These submarines are armed with heavyweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and mines, and can perform a variety of missions including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and special operations. Notably, they will also be equipped with indigenous Turkish weaponry, such as the AKYA heavy torpedoes and the ATMACA anti-ship missiles.
