Local authorities declared an emergency alert during the night, with social media users reporting explosions. The city’s mayor, Andrey Kravchenko, confirmed that air defense systems were active against the drones and advised residents to stay away from windows and for those living near the coast to remain indoors. Additionally, traffic near the city’s waterfront was restricted.
By morning, all beaches in Novorossiysk had been closed, and sappers were deployed to the area. The Russian Ministry of Defense later issued a brief statement claiming the destruction of two unmanned boats in the northeastern part of the Black Sea.
Apart from the naval drones, the ministry also reported the downing of aerial drones and missiles in several regions. According to their information, one missile from a "Vilha" multiple rocket launcher and two drones were intercepted over Belgorod, while three more drones were shot down over Kursk and two over Bryansk.
Analysts suggest that Sevastopol, located in the Crimean Peninsula, is no longer considered the main base for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Instead, much of the remaining fleet is now based in Novorossiysk. Satellite imagery shows that most of Russia's valuable assets in the Black Sea are currently stationed at this port, with additional protective measures in place, such as barges positioned to block potential Ukrainian maritime drone incursions.
Ukrainian USVs
Ukrainian maritime drone attacks have been a significant aspect of Ukraine's evolving strategy in its war with Russia. These uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), or sea drones, have primarily targeted Russian naval assets, infrastructure, and supply lines, particularly in the Black Sea. The attacks intensified throughout 2023 and 2024, demonstrating Ukraine's ability to strike deep into Russian-controlled waters.
Ukraine’s drone operations have targeted key infrastructure, such as the Kerch Bridge, a strategic link between Russia and Crimea. USVs, combined with aerial drones, have been used in repeated strikes on this critical structure, aiming to disrupt Russia's logistical routes.
