Saab partners with Singapore's DSTA to supply composite superstructures for new Navy vessels.

According to information published by Saab on August 22, 2024, the company has entered into an agreement with Singapore's Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) to provide six composite superstructures for the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) upcoming Multi-Role Combat Vessels (MRCVs).

Under this contract, Saab will be responsible for the detailed design, production, and final assembly of these superstructures. The composite superstructures, known for their lightweight properties, play a crucial role in reducing the vessels' center of gravity, which in turn enhances their stability.

Saab, having already contributed to the basic design of the MRCVs, will continue its close collaboration with DSTA, the RSN, other partners, and the shipbuilder throughout the project's duration. The first of these vessels is expected to be delivered to the RSN starting in 2028.

About the MRCVs

The Multirole Combat Vessel (MRCV) represents a significant advancement for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), designed to replace the aging Victory-class missile corvettes by 2028. Constructed by Singapore's ST Engineering Marine, with design support from Sweden's Saab, the MRCVs are expected to displace between 8,000 to 10,000 tons.

A key feature of the MRCV is its role as a "mothership," capable of deploying and coordinating unmanned systems across air, surface, and subsurface domains.

The vessels will be equipped with advanced weaponry, including the Aster and VL Mica surface-to-air missiles, and the locally developed Blue Spear anti-ship missile. The integration of artificial intelligence and data analytics is central to the design, ensuring that these ships can process vast amounts of information rapidly.
