The project will see construction begin this year, with the final vessel expected to be delivered in 2028. Navantia will handle the construction of the first corvette in Spain, while the second and third units will be completed in Saudi Arabia, including combat system integration and testing, following the successful model of the initial series.

This agreement also includes a comprehensive support package encompassing integrated logistics support, crew training, and operational evaluations. The Royal Saudi Navy will conduct these evaluations at the Rota Naval Base in Spain, where Navantia will provide technical assistance. A hundred Saudi engineers will receive specialized training to ensure the long-term sustainability of the vessels.

The new Avante 2200 corvettes will maintain the cutting-edge design and versatility that define their class. These ships are optimized for a range of missions, from maritime surveillance and search and rescue operations to the protection of strategic assets and combat roles in anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine, and electronic warfare. Navantia will integrate its advanced proprietary technologies into these vessels, including combat systems, communications, fire control, propulsion systems, and platform control technologies. The ships will also benefit from the participation of Navantia’s repair unit, which will handle maintenance during docking phases in San Fernando.

Royal Saudi Navy

The Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) are focused on modernizing and expanding their fleet to enhance maritime security and safeguard national interests. Their fleet includes a variety of vessels, such as frigates, corvettes, patrol boats, and mine warfare ships, reflecting their commitment to a balanced naval capability.

The frigate fleet comprises Al Riyadh-class and Al Madinah-class vessels. The Al Riyadh-class, derived from the French La Fayette design, features advanced weaponry, including Exocet MM40 Block II missiles and Aster 15 surface-to-air systems. These ships are designed for multi-role operations, emphasizing surface combat and air defense. The older Al Madinah-class frigates, built in the 1980s, continue to serve with updated armaments like Otomat missiles and Crotale air-defense systems.

The RSNF has also invested in modern corvettes, including the Al Jubail-class, based on the Spanish Avante 2200 design. These new vessels are equipped for versatile roles, from anti-surface and anti-air warfare to maritime security. The Badr-class corvettes, though older, remain operational, equipped with Harpoon missiles and providing essential support for patrol and escort missions.

For coastal defense, the Al Sadiq-class patrol boats are a critical asset. Armed with Harpoon missiles, these vessels ensure the security of Saudi Arabia's territorial waters. Additionally, the RSNF operates a fleet of mine countermeasure ships, such as the Sandown-class minehunters, which are vital for maintaining safe navigation in critical maritime areas.
