The Ukrainian Defense Ministry confirmed the successful attack, which also targeted a Ropucha-class large landing ship undergoing repairs. The missiles used were identified as American-made ATACMS, guided by U.S. satellite intelligence and reconnaissance drones.

The submarine had previously suffered severe damage from a Ukrainian strike in September 2023, leading to doubts about its seaworthiness despite Russian efforts to repair it.

The recent attack has been deemed catastrophic, with experts and Ukrainian officials asserting that the Rostov-on-Don is beyond repair. This incident marks a significant blow to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which has already seen substantial losses and has been forced to relocate many of its vessels to safer ports away from Crimea.

Comments

The psychological and propaganda impact of the sinking is profound. It serves as a significant morale booster for Ukrainian forces and a demoralizing blow to the Russian Navy, potentially deterring further aggressive operations. The incident has been widely covered, reinforcing Ukraine's resilience and capability to inflict substantial damage on a superior naval force.

Operationally, the attack strains Russia's repair and maintenance capabilities. The destruction of the Rostov-on-Don, along with damage to other vessels, exacerbates the logistical challenges faced by the Russian Navy. The need to relocate remaining assets to safer ports further from Ukrainian missile range disrupts established naval operations and complicates strategic planning.
