These state trials are a critical step in assessing the vessel's readiness and operational capabilities. The tests are being conducted to ensure that the corvette meets all the required standards and specifications before it officially joins the fleet.

About the corvette

Constructed in Turkey under a military cooperation agreement, this corvette is set to become the flagship of the Ukrainian Navy, replacing the scuttled Hetman Sahaidachny.

The Hetman Ivan Mazepa boasts advanced equipment and armament. It includes the Gokdeniz 35mm anti-aircraft gun, capable of firing 1,100 shots per minute to counter aerial threats within a 4 km range. For primary air defense, it features the French MICA VL missile system with a range of 20 km. Additionally, it has two STAMP remote-controlled weapon stations with 12.7-mm machine guns for close-in defense.

In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Hetman Ivan Mazepa can play multiple roles. Its advanced sensors and weaponry make it well-suited for anti-submarine warfare, surface-to-surface engagements, and air defense.

Given the strategic importance of the Black Sea and the frequent encounters with the Russian Navy, this corvette can significantly contribute to protecting Ukrainian waters and ensuring safe passage for commercial and military vessels. Furthermore, its capabilities in mine countermeasures are crucial for maintaining safe shipping lanes, especially given the ongoing threat of naval mines in the region.
