The Ukrainian fighters were members of the 73rd Naval Center of Special Operations Forces (SOF) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). They were confronted by Russian special forces during their landing attempt. During the battle, the Ukrainian abandoned their remaining boat and weaponss.
Two more Ukrainian landing boats sank. The Ukrainians attempted to penetrate the Russia-controlled territory in five boats. They were detected on approach, and upon nearing the shore, were met with gunfire from machine guns and mortars.
One boat managed to escape, with Ukrainian forces suffering a minimum of 20 soldiers killed, and one soldier wounded and captured. Russian soldiers seized several US AR-15 rifles and M249 light machine gun, German HK M320 grenade launchers, a Belgian FN SCAR assault rifle, and a modernized SVD sniper rifle.
The appearance of Ukrainian soldiers on the Tendrovskaya Spit was "that very 'surprise' in the Black Sea that Zelensky talked about to Fox News. Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country's army is preparing a new counteroffensive, one of the goals of which is to reach the Black Sea. He did not delve into details but promised "surprises" that would astonish the Russian army.
The Ukrainian SOF utilize GALAXY Trident 8 boats. These 8-meter boats, powered by a 400 horsepower engine, can carry up to 12 commandos at speeds exceeding 44 knots. Additionally, the boats are equipped with two Browning machine guns, navigation systems, radio communications, and sonar.
The GALAXY Trident 8 rigid inflatable boat is a new development introduced in 2023. The boat is sold by Brig Motors, a Ukrainian company specializing in the sale and service of watercraft.
