This launch enables the U.S. Navy to project military power far from its home bases, demonstrating an ability to influence regional dynamics and respond swiftly to potential threats or crises. This presence acts as a powerful deterrent against potential adversaries, signaling the U.S. commitment to defending its interests and supporting its allies, thereby discouraging aggressive actions.
In 2024, the Philippines and the United States are deepening their military relations significantly, driven by shared strategic interests and regional security concerns, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) has expanded U.S. access to nine Philippine military bases, including several near the South China Sea. These bases are undergoing significant upgrades, funded by the U.S., to improve airstrips, construct fuel storage facilities, and build command centers.
These strengthened military relations occur against the backdrop of ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea, involving China and several Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines. The enhanced U.S. military presence and cooperation with the Philippines are seen as measures to counterbalance China's growing assertiveness in the region, which has been a point of contention with Beijing.
About the F/A-18E Super Hornet
The Super Hornet's airframe is larger and heavier than its predecessor, allowing it to carry more fuel, which extends its range and endurance. The aircraft is powered by two General Electric F414-GE-400 turbofan engines that provide increased thrust and performance. The design improvements include a stretched fuselage and larger wing area, enabling it to carry more armaments and fuel.
In terms of avionics, the Super Hornet is equipped with the Raytheon APG-79 AESA radar. The cockpit features advanced displays and control systems, including a touch-sensitive control display and a large multi-purpose liquid crystal display. Pilots benefit from the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System, which enhances targeting and situational awareness.
The Super Hornet can carry a wide array of weapons, including air-to-air missiles like the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM, as well as precision-guided munitions such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM). Its capabilities span air superiority, close air support, reconnaissance, and aerial refueling mission.
