Harbor Patrol Units play a vital role in ensuring the security and safety of maritime environments across various jurisdictions, from metropolitan police departments to naval bases.
In cities like Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Police Department's Harbor Patrol Unit is responsible for patrolling all rivers, inlets, and waterways within the district. This unit responds to a variety of emergencies, such as overturned boats, vehicles or individuals in the water, and suicidal subjects on bridges.
The unit operates a fleet of about 20 vessels, ranging from jet skis to airboats, and all officers are trained as Public Safety Divers, prepared to conduct search, rescue, and recovery missions in depths ranging from six to 40 feet.
Similarly, the Seattle Police Harbor Patrol provides 24-hour operations, responding to over 6,000 calls annually. This unit covers 200 miles of city shoreline, 147 miles of freshwater, and 53 miles of saltwater. Their duties include marine law enforcement, search and rescue, and assisting in various water-related incidents.
On the naval side, the Harbor Patrol Units are crucial for the protection of military assets. For example, the Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) Harbor Patrol is tasked with securing the waterfront for several installations, including NBSD, Naval Base Coronado, and Naval Base Point Loma. This unit protects between 50 to 60 ships and manages a two-mile-long pier line. They provide continuous security for the piers, ships, and personnel, particularly focusing on high-value naval vessels.
