The KSS III Batch II submarine is characterized by its dimensions and displacement: it has a displacement of 3,358 tons when surfaced and increases to 3,750 tons when submerged.
The vessel measures 83.5 meters (approximately 273 feet 11 inches) in length and has a beam of 9.6 meters (around 31 feet 6 inches). The draught of this submarine is 7.62 meters (25 feet).
This model is equipped with an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, enhancing its submerged operational endurance by enabling it to operate underwater for extended periods without the need to surface for air. This AIP system is instrumental in improving the submarine's stealth capabilities, making it more difficult for adversaries to detect.
The technical specifications further include advanced sonar and radar systems for superior detection capabilities, allowing the submarine to accurately identify and track potential threats.
It is armed with torpedoes and missiles, providing the capability to engage a range of surface and underwater targets effectively. Additionally, the submarine is designed to carry indigenous ballistic missiles, highlighting South Korea's focus on bolstering its strategic defense capabilities.
