DSEI 2025: New Saab Nimbrix a Light and Precise Missile to Counter Emerging Aerial Threats.

At the DSEI 2025 exhibition in London, Saab presents to the public for the first time its Nimbrix missile, a defense system specifically designed to counter aerial threats from drones. Introduced a few weeks earlier, the missile is now being displayed through several scale models, providing a concrete demonstration of this new counter-drone capability.

Nimbrix is characterized by its compact design. Measuring less than one meter in length and weighing under three kilograms, it is significantly lighter than Saab’s established systems such as the RBS15 or the RBS 70. Its operational range is announced at up to five kilometers, equipped with an active seeker to track its target autonomously. The fragmentation warhead, with an air-burst function, is intended to neutralize both individual drones and swarms, addressing a threat that is increasingly frequent on today’s battlefields.

The missile’s development has followed a rapid prototyping approach. Saab has already conducted several test campaigns over the past year and is preparing its production infrastructure in parallel. The company is also considering containerized assembly options for the final production phase, an approach designed to offer greater logistical flexibility and adapt to the requirements of armed forces.

Operationally, Nimbrix is designed to function either as a stand-alone system supported by basic sensors or as part of a wider air defense network through interoperability with existing command and control systems. Saab emphasizes its ability to be deployed in large numbers to provide dense and cost-conscious coverage against multiple threats, including NATO Class II drones.

The missile reflects a shift in the way Saab approaches defense systems. Company representatives highlight that Nimbrix is not intended as a one-off product but as a platform that can evolve. Future iterations may include extended range or alternative seekers to address different types of targets. This approach is aimed at maintaining the system’s relevance in the face of evolving threats.

Alongside the technical aspects, Saab underlines that the proliferation of drones requires an industrial response that is both rapid and pragmatic. The increasing accessibility of unmanned systems, often difficult to detect with conventional means, is transforming the battlefield and compels the development of compact, adaptable, and economically viable solutions.

Saab positions Nimbrix as a continuation of its air defense expertise, while adopting a renewed industrial approach focused on modularity and rapid development. The widespread presence of drones in recent conflicts underscores the need for the industry to provide solutions adapted to a threat that is reshaping the current tactical balance.
