Description
The Sosna is a Russian-made short-range air defense missile system designed and manufactured by the Company Nudelman Precision Engineering Design Bureau (KBtochmash). The Sosna can destroy any type of air target including high-precision weapons e.g. cruise missiles and guided aircraft missiles to a maximum range of 10 km at a maximum altitude of 5 km. In December 2015, it was announced the first trials of the Sosna short-range air defense missile system. The system is expected to replace SA-13 Gopher Strela-10M air defense systems in service with the Russian armed forces. According to the manufacturer, a number of foreign countries, including those of the South-East Asia region and the Middle East, have shown interest in acquiring the Russian Sosna system.

Variants:
The SOSNA turret can be mounted on tracked armored chassis as the MT-LB or BMP-3 as well as the BTR-82A, 8x8 armored chassis.

Armament
The weapon system of the Sosna consists of 2x6 Sosna-R missile launchers mounted on a turret that can turn on 360°. The turret also includes air search and target tracking equipment, missile flight control units that are combined by an integrated high-precision ECM-protected electro-optical control system (EOCS). The EOCS is developed as self-sufficient, with the necessary list of information channels, with its own stabilization system, automatic guidance system, and digital computer system. It could be used day/night and in adverse weather conditions owing to the application of a high-sensitivity thermal image channel that is not influenced by fog and smoke. EOCS also can execute independent automatic sector search by zone scanning and can detect the targets using an automatic control unit of target acquisition and tracking. The electro-optical system control (EOCS) ensures the target detection, automatic acquisition, tracking, measuring of angular coordinate and distance, and also laying of an information field of a laser-beam control channel to the target at any time in the conditions of jamming and natural noise, including against the background of clouds, terrain features, and horizon line. The SOSNA-R 9M337 (SA-24) hyper-velocity beam rider missile is a two-stage missile designed for interception of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, as well as guided weapons and cruise missiles. It has a combined impact/proximity laser fuse. Its payload is made up of two warheads weighing a total of 7 kg. The fragmented-rod warhead is designed for proximity detonation when flying close to the target, while the armor-piercing/fragmentation warhead goes off on impact. The Sosna can be reloaded in less than 12 minutes. The optical fire control system affords the Sosna AD system high survivability and enhanced jamming immunity. The Sosna’s self-contained optical sensor allows tracking 50 targets and engaging one on the move.
Design and protection
The Sosna is based on the hull of the multi-purpose tracked armored vehicle MT-LB. The hull of the MT-LB is all-welded steel armor with the crew compartment at the front, the engine immediately behind the crew compartment on the left side, and the troop compartment at the rear of the hull. The all-welded steel armor provides the occupants with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters. The missile weapon station of the Sosna is mounted on the vehicle roof center. The small turret of the standard version of the MT-LB is removed and replaced by a single hatch. The driver and gunner have a windscreen in front of their positions which, when in action, is covered by a flap hinged at the top. There is three hatches at the front of the vehicle roof.
Mobility
The Sosna air defense missile system uses the MT-LB tracked chassis. The MT-LB torsion bar suspension on either side consists of six roadwheels with the drive sprocket at the front and the idler at the rear with hydraulic shock absorbers on swing arms on the first and last roadwheel stations. There are no track-return rollers as the top of the track rests on the top of the road wheels. The MT-LB is motorized with YaMZ 238 V, V-8 cylinder diesel developing 240 hp at 2,100 rpm. The vehicle has a maximum road speed of 62 km/h with a maximum road range of 500 km. The Sosna combat vehicle of the system is equipped with modern precision top navigation equipment and also a set of data transceiving to the battery and regimental command posts.
Combat use
The Sosna can be used as a part of the battery, including the battery of a mixed air defense unit, receiving target designation from a battery control post, from the commander's vehicle, or independently. Thus, the development of ADS Sosna will allow receiving a system with a very high level of performance with an acceptable level of expenditure. It is necessary to note that for the first time, the system of this class will be capable of struggling effectively with a wide range of high-precision strike weapons, and also detecting the targets in large sectors and targeting SAM up to the range of 10 km, not disclosing itself by radio-frequency radiation. The battery of SAM Sosna can use the sector search and thus can operate without external target designation, carrying out all-around surveillance and target designation in a passive mode that does impossible the attacks of anti-radiation missiles.
