Ukraine armed forces use HIMARS M31A1 GMLRS rocket as a precision weapon killer

According to video and information published on Social Networks on August 3, 2022, Ukrainian armed forces use M31A1 GMLRS (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System) to target Russian troops. When fired from the HIMARS or M270 rocket launcher, the M31A1 is a precision weapon killer with a high level of accuracy.

The M270 and M142 HIMARS MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) launch platforms provide the mobility, command and control interface, communications processing, computation, and Soldier-machine interface to accurately fire a single rocket or a multiple rocket sequence. The HIMARS can fire a pod of up to six guided M31A1 227mm rockets.

The M31A1 is a 298mm guided rocket that equipped with a 90 kg warhead with 23 kg of explosive that can detonate above the ground, on impact, or deep in a bunker. The M31A1 GMLRS (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System) can be fired by the HIMARS rocket launcher systems based on a truck chassis as well as the M270A1 rocket launcher system based on a tracked chassis.

The M31A1 GMLRS-Unitary rocket is an improved version of the M31 GMLRS-Unitary rocket, replacing the previous dual-mode fuze with a multi-mode fuze with point detonate, delay, and proximity capabilities. The M31A1 GMLRS-Unitary warhead is designed to reduce collateral damage when employed against area and point targets in restrictive terrain.

The M31A1 GMLRS guided rocket is capable of attacking targets out to ranges of 70 kilometers and uses Inertial Measurement Unit guidance along with GPS to enhance accuracy.

Citing information from the ThinkDefence website, Guided MLRS coupled with the Universal Fire Control System of HIMARS or M270 gives an extremely precise all-weather capability. Combined with the M270 or HIMARS rocket launcher system, the GMLRS is one of the most effective weapons for land forces when a long-range precision strike is required.
