Russian army deploys TOS-1A heavy flamethrower system to Bielgorod 40 km north of Ukrainian border



According to a video published by Frederik Pleitgen, CNN Senior International Correspondent and Anchor on February 26, 2022, the Russian army has deployed its TOS-1A heavy flamethrower system. The video published by Frederik Pleitgen shows TOS-1A being transported by a truck going to the South of Belgorod, a city located 40 km north of the border of Ukraine.

Belgorod is a city and the administrative center of Belgorod Oblast, Russia, located on the Seversky Donets River 40 kilometers north of the border with Ukraine.

Five days ago, satellites images were released by Maxar Technologies showing multiple new field deployments of armored equipment and troops northwest of Belgorod and near Soloti and Valuyki, Russia.

This new activity represents a change in the pattern of the previously observed deployments of battle groups (tanks, armored personnel carriers, artillery, and support equipment). Until recently, most of the deployments had been seen primarily positioned at or near existing military garrisons and training areas.

The TOS-1A is a Russian-made Heavy flamethrower system that is designed for fire support of infantry and tanks, defeating enemy personnel at an unconcealed environment and under the shelter in various kinds of offensive and defensive combat action, and also for incapacitation of light armored transport and vehicles.

The TOS-1A is able to fire two types of rockets equipped with incendiary and thermobaric with a range from 600 m to 6,000 m. The vehicle is armed with 24 rockets that can cover 40,000m² of terrain. The thermobaric is a type of explosive that uses oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a high-temperature explosion. In practice, the blast wave typically produced by such a weapon is of a significantly longer duration than that produced by a conventional condensed explosive.

Thermobaric weapons are considered to be one of the most brutal war weapons that exist. The missiles are filled with a highly explosive fuel and chemical mix, which, on exploding can cause supersonic blast waves that can obliterate everything in its path, including buildings and humans.
