Developed by the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and local defence industry of Singapore, this next generation AFV is equipped with systems not found in its predecessor, such as a laser rangefinder and automated firing control systems.

The project of the new AFV was initiated in 2006 to replace the Ultra M113 AFV, which has been in service since the early 70s, the next-generation AFV could be commissioned by 2019.

Three types of light combat vehicles will be used by the Singapore Armed Forces including the Terrex, 8x8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier, the Bionix tracked armoured infantry fighting vehicle and the new AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicle).

The AFV is a result of a close cooperation between the SAF, DSTA (Defense Science and Technology Agency), and ST Kinetics of Singapore as the manufacturer of the NG-AFV.

The next generation of AFV is bigger than the current Bionix 2 which is in services with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to offer more comfort the crew and for additional electronics in the future.

The AFV provides a protection Level 4 STANAG 4569 which offers a ballistic protection against firing of small arms 14.5mm caliber. The floor of the vehicle is also protected from mine blast.

The AFV is motorized with an 700 hp engine. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 70 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km.

The AFV is fitted with a Remote Controlled Weapon System armed with a 300 Bushmaster automatic cannon. A 7.62mm machine gun is mounted to the left of the main armament. The gunner is equipped with stabilized weapon sight, laser rangefinder, day and thermal camera. The commander has its own panoramic sight which can turn independently from the turret.
