Equipped with an array of specialized firearms and equipment, the GIGN is prepared to operate in any environment and tackle any threat. They have a formidable arsenal, which includes automatic and specialized firearms, assault rifles, submachine guns, riot shotguns, sniper rifles, riot guns, smoke grenades, stun grenades, and stinger grenades. Furthermore, GIGN operatives utilize specialized equipment such as body armor, ballistic shields, entry tools, armored vehicles, thermal and night-vision devices, fiberscope cameras, and motion detectors.

As France's premier law enforcement and special operations unit, GIGN's roles encompass counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, surveillance of national threats, protection of government officials, and targeting organized crime. These specialized tasks require highly trained, physically fit, and mentally robust operatives who have undergone a rigorous and exceptionally grueling selection and training process.

The GIGN's selection process targets individuals with exceptional physical and mental abilities. Prospective operators undertake a one-week pre-selection screening, followed by a grueling fourteen-month training program for those who make the cut. The training covers a wide range of skills, including weapons handling, tactical operations, parachuting, diving, and negotiation. Notably, the initial phase of the training has a high failure rate, with only 7-8% of the volunteers ultimately making it through the process.

The unit consists of nearly 1,000 operators stationed in Satory, near Versailles in the Paris area, and fourteen regional GIGN branches located across metropolitan France and the French overseas territories. It's organized into four forces: the Intervention Force, the Observation & Search Force, the Security & Protection Force, and the Regional Branches Force, each specializing in distinct aspects of tactical operations.

Over the years, the GIGN has built an impressive track record, participating in over a thousand operations, freeing hundreds of hostages, and apprehending numerous dangerous criminals. The unit has often found itself in the global limelight, particularly for its role in the 1994 Air France Flight 8969 hijacking and the response to the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks.

The GIGN's arsenal is a testament to its operational capabilities. Its extensive range of firearms includes Glock 17/19/26 and SIG Sauer SP 2022 pistols, Manurhin MR 73 and Smith & Wesson Model 686 revolvers, HK MP5, HK MP7, and FN P90 submachine guns, and Remington Model 870, Franchi SPAS-12, and Benelli M4 shotguns. Furthermore, they deploy HK416, HK417, HK G36, SIG SG 550 and variants, CZ BREN 2, and ceremonially, FAMAS assault rifles. They also use Accuracy International Arctic Warfare sniper rifles in .308 and .338 and PGM Hécate II in 12.7x99mm. For defense, GIGN employs ballistic shields and various types of armored vehicles, including civilian-style SUVs and armored personnel carriers, some outfitted with assault ladders.

In the final analysis, the GIGN embodies professionalism, resilience, and excellence, factors that have positioned it as a global standard-bearer in SWAT operations.
